Every family has a story. Some stories are marked by hardship, uncertainty, and loss. Others remind us that with timely support, compassionate partnerships, and unwavering hope, even the darkest seasons can give way to new beginnings.
At LifeCare Children & Women Empowerment Initiative (LCCWEI), one of the greatest privileges of our work is witnessing these transformations firsthand. Recently, during a routine family welfare visit, our team had the opportunity to reconnect with the Ashwel family and reflect on a journey that has become a powerful testimony of resilience, restoration, and hope.
When Life Took an Unexpected Turn
A few years ago, the Ashwel family found themselves in a devastating situation. Mr. Ashwel became seriously ill and was unable to work for more than two years. As his health deteriorated, the family’s only reliable source of income disappeared. Financial pressures mounted rapidly, making it increasingly difficult to provide even the most basic necessities. Recalling those difficult days, Mr. Ashwel shared:“There were days when we had nothing to eat. Sometimes we could not even afford water in the house.”With no steady income, the family’s future seemed uncertain. Their children’s education was at risk, daily survival became a constant struggle, and hope appeared to be slipping away.
A Timely Intervention
During this critical period, LCCWEI stepped in through its child scholarship and family empowerment programmes. Our support ensured that the children remained in school while also providing assistance that enabled Mrs. Ashwel to restart her small plantain business—a business that had previously collapsed due to lack of capital. What began as a modest business support initiative soon became the turning point that the family desperately needed.Rebuilding a Family’s Future
Today, the impact of that intervention is visible throughout the household. Mrs. Ashwel’s business is once again thriving and has become an important source of income for the family. It helps provide food, meet household expenses, and support the children’s education. More importantly, it has restored stability and confidence within the home. Looking back on their journey, Mr. Ashwel reflected with gratitude:“When LifeCare came in, things began to change. They helped my wife restart her business. Today, the business is feeding us and taking care of our needs.”The family has also celebrated significant milestones along the way. They have completed their traditional marriage and moved from a single-room apartment into a more spacious home—important steps that reflect the progress they have made together.
More Than Financial Support
Perhaps the most moving moment during our visit came as Mr. Ashwel described what the journey has meant to him personally.“Without LifeCare, I was already gone. I was just a dead man living. God brought LifeCare to revive me back to life.”His heartfelt words remind us that true empowerment extends far beyond financial assistance. It is about restoring dignity, rebuilding confidence, strengthening families, and giving people the opportunity to believe in tomorrow once again.
