At Lifecare Children & Women Empowerment Initiative (LCCWEI), we believe that meaningful and sustainable community development begins with listening. Before implementing any intervention, it is important to understand the realities, challenges, strengths, and aspirations of the people we seek to serve. It is with this commitment that an LCCWEI assessment team visited Umunyere Alayi in Alayi, Abia State, on June 7, 2026, to conduct a community needs assessment among selected widows and single mothers.
The assessment team, comprising Mr. Samuel Ndubuisi, Mr. Chike Uche, and Mr. Kingsley Kalu, engaged directly with vulnerable women in the community to better understand their circumstances and identify opportunities for empowerment and long-term support.
Understanding the Needs of Vulnerable Women
A total of eleven women participated in the assessment interviews, including four widows and seven single mothers. Through open and respectful conversations, the team gathered information about their family situations, current sources of income, existing skills, and areas where support could help improve their livelihoods.
The assessment revealed a common theme among participants: a strong desire to become economically self-reliant despite the challenges they face. Many of the women expressed interest in acquiring practical vocational skills that could help them generate sustainable income and better support their families.
Among the skills identified were:
- Baking and confectionery production
- Sewing and tailoring
- Small business development and management
Several participants are already involved in small-scale businesses such as the sale of clothing, provisions, crayfish, and dry fish. However, many noted that limited capital, inadequate training, and lack of business support have hindered their ability to expand and improve their enterprises.
Stories of Strength and Resilience
The assessment also provided an opportunity for the women to share their personal experiences and challenges.
Many of the widows spoke about the difficulties they have encountered since losing their spouses. Several are now solely responsible for raising and providing for large families with little financial or social support. The burden of meeting daily needs, paying school fees, and ensuring their children’s well-being remains a significant challenge.
The single mothers also shared their journeys of raising children independently, often without support from the fathers of their children. Despite these circumstances, their determination and resilience were evident throughout the discussions. Many expressed a willingness to learn new skills, engage in productive work, and pursue opportunities that would enable them to build a better future for themselves and their children.
Their stories serve as a powerful reminder that, given the right support and opportunities, vulnerable women can become catalysts for positive change within their families and communities.
A Warm Reception from the Community
The LCCWEI team was warmly welcomed by members of the Alayi community, who expressed appreciation for the organization’s willingness to visit, listen, and engage directly with the people most affected by economic hardship.
Community members commended the assessment process and welcomed the prospect of future interventions aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable women and children in the area. The visit strengthened relationships between LCCWEI and the community while laying the foundation for future collaboration and impact.
Looking Ahead: The First Step Toward Empowerment
This assessment represents the first stage of LCCWEI’s pilot empowerment initiative in Alayi. The information gathered during the visit will be carefully reviewed by the organization’s management team to inform the design and implementation of sustainable support programs.
Recognizing the importance of proper planning, resource availability, and long-term impact, beneficiaries for the initial phase of the program will be selected based on the urgency of their needs and the type of intervention most likely to create meaningful and lasting change.
LCCWEI remains committed to ensuring that every intervention promotes dignity, self-reliance, and sustainable development rather than temporary relief alone.
Our Commitment Continues
At Lifecare Children & Women Empowerment Initiative, we understand that empowerment begins with understanding. By listening to the voices of widows, single mothers, and vulnerable families, we can design programs that address real needs and create lasting opportunities.
As we continue this journey in Alayi and other underserved communities, we remain dedicated to building a future where women are empowered, children are supported, and families have the opportunity to thrive.
Together, we can create stronger communities, restore hope, and transform lives.
