Happiness! If someone asks you now, “are you happy?” what would be your response? Do you expect to always be happy? Different people have varying perspectives of happiness. Some would associate happiness with their success, some health, some state of mind, some family, some peace, just to name but a few. The World Health Organization indicates that happiness is a fundamental goal for every person. Bringing in the aspect of a “goal” points out that happiness is something that a person should strive to achieve! Hence, a question arises; is happiness a state of being or a process?
I think we can all attest that there is that thing that brings joy, satisfaction, peace, ecstasy, thrill, and exhilaration. Many people pursue happiness by doing things that make them feel good or bring joy to their friends, colleagues, or family. WHO recognizes 20th March as International Day of Happiness. This day is meant to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world. Ending poverty, reducing inequality, and protecting our planet are three key things that the WHO focuses on as aspects that lead to well-being and happiness. How does this make you feel? Are you happy as a result of economic sustainability as this seems to be the case?
Where does your happiness come from? Is your happiness momentarily? One thing that I can attest to as a believer of Christ is that there is fullness of joy in the Lord. Psalm 34:5 says that “Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.” Therefore, no matter how the current situation is, look to God for happiness and He won’t let you down.
