Mental health is equally as important as physical health. The talk on mental health has taken a turn for the better, with more mental health education and care being emphasized. However, mental health has been a matter of focus for adults and in most cases, we forget that our children’s mental health is equally important.
Our children are under pressure, which is constantly building as they grow. They feel the pressure to be the best they can be in every field that they are gradually involved in. From formal schoolwork to the extracurricular activities that we gladly sign them up for. Children feel the intense need to perform well and avoid disappointing their caregivers and those they love. A build-up of this pressure causes them to feel overwhelmed and it is our role as caregivers to protect their mental health.
Providing the children with a conducive home environment is one of the most significant ways we can protect them. A home environment free of stressors where children feel free and loved is paramount to protecting their mental health. Additionally, always reassuring our children and ensuring them that we love them no matter what helps them navigate the growing pressure better. Lastly, encouraging them to pray and make their burdens known to God helps them know that despite all circumstances they will never be alone.
