Menstruation is a natural physiological body process that involves the releasing of blood and associated matter from the uterus through the vagina in a menstrual cycle. Menstrual hygiene management involves maintaining hygiene associated with the menstrual process. This process is continuous and doesn’t because a pandemic has occurred. It is an issue that requires cleanliness. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) indicates that 70% of health workers are women, and shortage of essential menstrual hygiene products like sanitary pads and tampons are already affecting certain populations. This means that the issue of menstrual hygiene management needs serious considerations.
Water, sanitization, and hygiene are considered to be the first line of defense in managing the spread of COVID-19. Access to clean water and soap for washing hands is a critical need as a response to the pandemic. This aspect of cleanliness should never be forgotten in addition to the availability of sanitary towels and tampons for our women and girls from menarche to menopause. The restriction of movement has limited or disrupted access to facilities for changing, washing, or cleaning during menstruation. As the front-line health workers, especially in the developing countries, get a helping hand in protecting them from contracting the virus, the women should also have access to menstrual hygiene essential needs such as sanitary towels and tampons.
Immediate relief activities by humanitarian agencies need not only consider the economic and social aid relief but also the menstrual hygiene management activities. Women and girls in the menstrual age group in developing countries are more vulnerable to lack of access to facilities for changing, washing, or cleaning during menstruation. There is need for awareness also to eliminate the stigma, shame, or shameful cultural practices associated with menstruation. As an organization that is concerned about the wellness of vulnerable communities, Lifecare Children and Women Empowerment Initiative (LCCWEI) takes the responsibility of availing these essentials to the girls and women in dire situations in developing counties.
