At Lifecare Children & Women Empowerment Initiative (LCCWEI), we recognize that investing in girls’ access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is more than a tech issue—it's a social justice issue. When girls have access to digital skills and the internet, they are better equipped to learn, lead, and lift others in their communities.
Why Girls in ICT Matters
Technology is reshaping the world. From classrooms to boardrooms, from mobile health clinics to small businesses, ICT is powering innovation. But too many girls—especially in underprivileged and rural communities—are being left behind. Globally, women hold only 24% of jobs in the digital economy, and the numbers are even lower in sub-Saharan Africa. Girls are underrepresented in STEM fields and often lack access to training, equipment, and mentorship. This digital divide means missed opportunities—not just for individual girls, but for their families, communities, and economies.
Barriers That Hold Girls Back
Despite the rapid advancement of technology, many girls still face barriers such as:
- Cultural stereotypes that discourage girls from pursuing tech-related careers.
- Lack of access to computers, smartphones, or reliable internet in low-income areas.
- Limited representation of female role models in ICT fields.
- Few safe learning environments where girls can explore technology freely and fearlessly.
What LCCWEI is Doing to Make a Difference
At LCCWEI, we are committed to bridging this gap. Through our empowerment programs, we are looking forward to seeing girls at the forefront in technological matters. We intend to host digital literacy workshops for girls in rural communities. We are open to partner with local schools to provide access to basic coding and computer skills. We mentor young girls and intend to specialize in mentoring young women who show interest in ICT, guiding them with encouragement and exposure. We also encouraging parents and communities to break stereotypes and support girls in achieve their dreams in whichever area they are interested in.
We’ve seen firsthand how girls who once feared that their dreams were lost now dream bigger dreams and have high hopes of a brighter future. We are witnesses that opportunity can spark transformation.
The Way Forward
We believe the future is digital—and it must be inclusive. We call on educators, community leaders, donors, and mentors to invest in the digital future of girls. Let us create spaces where girls feel seen, heard, and supported in the world of ICT.
You can help by:
- Volunteering to teach or mentor.
- Donating computers or tech resources.
- Supporting our girls' ICT clubs and training sessions.
- Sharing this message to raise awareness.
As we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, let’s remember: when we empower a girl, we empower generations. The screen before her is not just a window to the world—it is a mirror reflecting her potential. “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” – Proverbs 31:25 Let’s make sure every girl has the tools and opportunities to step boldly into that future.
