Being there for a child at every moment is a precious gift that every child deserves. Extending love for the children by getting into their world through connecting to their emotional and physical needs helps to show them that someone cares about them. Connecting to the children and being their friends helps them to know the challenges they experience and how to help overcome them. Like adults, children also face such challenges as stress and trauma. Without connecting to their world, it can be difficult to know what the children are going through. This is because most of them cannot express themselves and point out what they are experiencing.
When children lose their loved ones such as a parent or are in an abusive household, they undergo childhood trauma. In the United States, more than one-third of children experience traumatic circumstances by the time they turn 16. This leads to post-traumatic stress when they become adults, which in turn affects their livelihood. The aftermath of childhood trauma can be reduced by taking a genuine interest in the children’s lives and talking about things that matter. A healthy child in physical, emotional, and psychological aspects increases the likelihood of a better adulthood.
For the past 3 years, the Covid-19 pandemic has been affecting lives. Children are not to be overlooked when it comes to taking care of those affected by the pandemic. Children from families that were severely hurt as a result of a pandemic like Covid-19 have experienced trauma. This could be as a result of a loss in life or lost income sources for the parents that lead to devastation. Apart from the global epidemics, children also face trauma when their parents are not in a healthy relationship. Abusive relationships or substance abuse from parents have a critical impact on the wellness of the children.
It is a call to everyone to plug into children’s lives and help them eliminate trauma. Culturally responsive involvement as well as trauma-informed care help to overcome stigma and social adversities that affect children’s lives. There is a need to strengthen families and build upon love to bring up children in a trauma-free society. Everyone in a child’s life has a role in ensuring the child is safe and free from social and cultural-related trauma. Being mindful of the children would start by being mindful of ourselves. Let’s uphold this noble cause of raising healthy minds.
